Dramatic increase to Victorian road toll

The number of people who have died on Victorian roads during 2016 currently stands at 118 - up 13.5% from 104 people at this time last year. This figure is the highest recorded Victorian road toll since 2011.

Fatalities among motorcyclists has more than doubled, and make up over 26% of fatalities on our roads. Drivers still make up the highest proportion of road fatality victims, with almost 45% of the total road toll comprising of car drivers.

The alarming new figures are a sobering reminder that we need to continue to make concerted efforts to improve road safety. While public awareness campaigns regarding speeding, drink and drug driving has seen a reduction in the number of deaths on Victorian roads, it is important that complacency does not prevent further advances being made.

The TAC announced this week that they will be trialling 'alco-gates' at specific locations throughout Victoria in attempt to further reduce the incidence of drink-driving. The gates operate similarly to regular boom gates and require the driver to pass a breath test for blood-alcohol levels before the gates allow the driver to pass. The gates have been successfully implemented in Sweden, and it is anticipated that the first trial of the new gates will commence in 2018. Although it is unclear whether the gates will enjoy similar success in Victoria, their implementation is a welcome initiative to combat our rising road toll.
