"Black spot" funding announced

"Black spot" funding announced

The State Government has recently announced a total funding package of $340 million to fix rural and regional roads across Victoria. This commitment is an effort to reduce the number of serious injuries and deaths occurring on Victorian roads.

Part of that funding has been specifically allocated to repairing the Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road, which has been described as having one of the worst safety performance records of any section of road in Victoria . Statistics indicate that between July 2008 and June 2013, a total of 19 transport accidents led to 7 separate fatalities on this stretch of road alone.

The announcement comes in support of the Transport Accident Commission's Towards Zero campaign, which aims to eventually eradicate deaths and serious injuries on Victorian roads.

The campaign, together with enforcement of speed limits, drug and alcohol limits and seat belt use, appears to be having some success, with Victoria recording one of the lowest road tolls for the year to date since records began. This is welcome news, as the impact of any fatality is devastating to the victim's family, friends and the broader community.

Assisting injured drivers and their families from our Melton office over the past four years has served as a solemn reminder of the devastation that injuries and fatalities from transport accidents can have on the local community. It is hoped that this funding allocation to the Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road will reduce the number of damaging accidents that occur in western Victoria.
