More Court support for victims

More Court support for victims

We were pleased to hear that the Victorian Labor Government plans to provide more funding to help victims navigate the Court system. Attending Court is a daunting and confusing experience. Victims who are not provided with proper guidance and support will likely not feel that they have been listened to or that justice has been done. Most people have little knowledge of the law and find it difficult to follow what is happening at Court. They can't be sure they have been treated properly or received a fair outcome. Lawyers, Judges and Court staff constantly use legal jargon and talk about complex concepts. If a victim cannot understand their situation, it is difficult for them to feel they have control over it and for them to be satisfied with the outcome. This creates a lot of uncertainty and frustration for victims, and undermines faith in the legal system. Introducing more'Intermediaries' who assist victims at Court is a positive step towards resolving these difficulties. We are proud that many of our lawyers volunteer to assist women involved in Intervention Order hearings at the Magistrates' Court. We understand how important it is for clients to receive clear information and advice, to take control of their situation, and to make decisions about their case. The Court system rarely allows for these things to happen and increased funding is overdue and very welcome.
