Bourke Street tragedy Inquest adjourned

Her Honour Sara Hinchey launched the Coronial Inquest into the Bourke Street tragedy this morning in the Victorian Coroners Court.

Inquests are public hearings concerning deaths caused by accidents or in unnatural or unexpected circumstances.

The State Coroner does not attribute fault but is required to determine the facts surrounding the deaths and make recommendations to avoid similar deaths in the future.

With the consent of the Coroner, a person or family with an interest in the hearing can have a lawyer represent them, ask questions of witnesses, and make suggestions to the Coroner.

Redlich's Work Injury Lawyers is acting on behalf of two families whose loved ones were killed in the devastating event on 20 January 2017.

Both families hope that the Inquest will prevent anything similar ever happening again, said a representative of the firm.

As the police have interviewed many hundreds of witnesses, it will be a very detailed and extensive investigation.

The Inquest is not expected to commence until late 2018.
