Safe Work Australia has released a publication this week providing national guidance for businesses and individuals working with silica.

With a view to reduce the instance of disease from respirable crystalline silica dust exposure in the workplace, the guide provides direction on keeping workers safe through consultation, air monitoring and health monitoring.

Queensland continues to pave the way for change and has released a Code of Practice for the stone benchtop industry.  This will assist workplaces to understand their work health and safety duties and outline controls for work involving silica dust.

Effective from 31 October 2019, the Code applies to all fabrication or processing of engineered and natural stone benchtops.

The Safe Work guide is available here.

You can view the Queensland Code of Practice here.

If you or someone you know has been exposed to respirable silica dust, we invite you contact our dust diseases team to discuss your potential rights and entitlements to us on (03) 9321 9988.
