Last month, Bill Shorten MP introduced a bill to Parliament which seeks to establish a national agency tasked with eradicating asbestos in Australia. In his press conference, Minister Shorten reflected on the necessity of such action and commented that asbestos is the worst industrial menace that will go on killing for decades.
asbestos related diseases, such as mesothelioma, are increasing. Further, the demographic of those affected is evolving from industrial workers to the wider population. Studies show that increasing numbers of people are developing asbestos related diseases as a result of exposure to asbestos fibres through home renovations, unsafe removal practices, poor maintenance or damage to materials containing asbestos.
