The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) has released its statement on the role that radiologists can play in diagnosing and monitoring silicosis. The College has recommended CT scanning as the best tool to screen workers. Many employers are now introducing screening programs where exposure to silica dust is a risk. This is similar to screening programs rolled out in the 1970s and 1980s in workplaces where asbestos was present.
If you work with products containing silica like in the stone manufacturing industry, you should speak to your employer about screening for silicosis. In Victoria, at least 1700 workers have already participated in screening for silicosis.
