Why did you become a lawyer?
To be honest I think my Dad first put the idea of becoming a lawyer in my head when I was at primary school. I remember him telling me that I'd probably make a good lawyer one day judging by how much arguing and talking back I did! I'm not sure that was supposed to be an inspirational comment though and more of an expression of parental exasperation?
What has been your most rewarding case?
I helped an absolutely beautiful young woman win her difficult case against a hospital recently. She was a nurse who hurt her shoulder when the elderly patient she was assisting fell and grabbed her arm. The hospital put up a massive fight but she stayed strong and had so many wonderful friends and family who supported her too. Hers was a very difficult and technical case legally but my client was just such a pleasure to help so I'm so proud we got a win for her!
Who is your hero/role model?
There are just so many strong and inspirational women I look up to. Come to think of it they are all fierce women with brains and killer style; Julia Gillard, Julie Bishop, Dame Quentin Bryce, Maggie T, Ita Buttrose and Cate Blanchett all spring to mind!
Do you have any pets?
I've got a beautiful King Charles Cavalier Spaniel called Gidget and a Pug called Bowser. My youngest son is a mad Super Mario fan so when we got a boy dog it just had to be a Bowser! It's funny because he really is the 'boss' too!
Last book read?
I love reading so much! The last few books I've read were all amazing, The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan, All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr and Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood. Before that I read the Wolf Hall trilogy by Hilary Mantel which came in at a hefty 2000 pages or so!
Number one holiday destination?
Queensland! We've got some rellos who live at Palm Beach on the Gold Coast and whenever I visit I wonder why we live in Victoria!
What is something most people don't know about you?
I can give you two little tidbits: I'm into melodic death metal and I'm also a sci-fi nerd. Most people are pretty surprised by what's playing on my stereo if they jump in my car with me!
What motivates you to work hard?
I love what I do for a living so that's motivation in itself but I do really get a buzz from taking something I'm really good at and using it to help other people. I also want my boys to grow up appreciating the value of a career and how important it is to enjoy what you do.
What advice would you give to an aspiring lawyer?
The law is such a huge area and we've all experienced those times when someone comes up to you at a party and says "hey, you're a lawyer so what do you know about powers of attorney/divorce/intervention orders..." No-one can know everything, no matter how smart you are or how hard you work. Find an area of law that really interests you and specialise in it if you can. Nothing beats the feeling you get when you wake up one day and realise you've got most of the answers and can use your powers for good!
