New WorkCover laws introduced into Parliament

New WorkCover laws introduced into Parliament

The Victorian Government has introduced a bill into parliament aiming to consolidate the current law governing a worker's entitlements to compensation. At present, workers are required to comply with the provisions in the Accident Compensation Act 1985 as well as the Accident Compensation (WorkCover Insurance) Act 1993. Both Acts have been amended extensively by parliament at various times, and many of the provisions are convoluted and difficult to understand. Some sections have become completely unnecessary. The Workplace Injury Rehabilitation and Compensation Bill 2013 intends to simplify the current system of compensation for workers and streamline the application and claims process. The Bill is currently being considered by Parliament and, if it passes both houses in the expected timeframe, will take effect as of 1 July 2014. If you or someone you know have sustained an injury whilst at work, we suggest you contact our of our WorkCover experts on (03) 9321 9988.
