Transport accidents still a major source of pain for Victorians

Victoria recorded its lowest road toll since 1924 in 2013, prompting Victoria police to praise motorists for observing safety messages and paying more attention on the roads.

The number of people who died on Victorian roads in 2013 was down 14% from the previous year, with 40 less fatalities from transport accidents over the last 12 months. While most age groups saw a reduction in the number of fatalities, the number of people aged 70 and over who died as a result of transport accidents in 2013 increased by 28%.

There has also been an increase in the prevalence of drugs amongst people who have been killed or seriously injured whilst travelling on Victorian roads. Police have indicated that this will be a major focus for them in 2014, together with continuing to reduce the road toll.

Although statistics have not yet been released, the Victorian State Government has indicated that the reduction in fatalities has not correlated to a reduction in the number of people seriously injured on Victorian roads in 2013.
