TAC back away from shock tactics with latest road safety campaign

The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) have retreated from their recent campaign of shocking Victorian drivers into safer driving patterns, with their latest television and radio advertisements focusing on the next generation of road users.

By posing the question What kind of driver are you raising? , the campaign aims to draw attention to what children absorb whilst travelling in the car with their parents. The bad habits referred to in the television commercial, such as checking a mobile phone or verbal abuse directed at other drivers, can become normalised for children who see it from the adults around them every day. The new campaign marks a significant shift for the TAC from recent awareness strategies, which have focused on presenting viewers with confronting images of high impact collisions and graphic injuries in an attempt to shock Victorian drivers into driving more carefully on our roads.

The change in advertising tact has been welcomed by Michael Lombard, partner at Adviceline Injury Lawyers, who noted that previous approaches have been distressing for road trauma victims. It can be very upsetting for someone who is already living in pain every day to be constantly reminded of their own traumatic experience through unnecessarily graphic advertisements, he said.
